About Sigla

Sigla Research Center works at the intersection of research and practice to strengthen deliberative democracy and resilient public spheres across the Philippines and the Global South. We work with researchers, practitioners, and communities to document, connect, and build knowledge around inclusive and deliberative forms of public engagement.

Our approach
Deliberative democracy is not a foreign concept to Filipinos. Long before the term had a name, communities across the country were already practicing it — through malayang talakayan, harampang, pulong-pulong, bitiyara, and other traditions of open and reflexive discussion before collective decisions are made.

At Sigla, we build on this existing foundation and practices. Our work is grounded in the belief that Filipinos, and communities more broadly, already carry the practices needed for inclusive and empathic dialogue. Our role is to document, strengthen, and connect these practices together for more impactful decision-making.

This shapes how we work with organizations, partner communities, and assembly members. We view them as knowledge-holders who bring their own experience and practice.

Flagship initiative

Our current flagship program, #FYP: For Young Women Peacebuilders, is a digital peacebuilding initiative implemented in partnership with UN Women Philippines.

The program engages 24 digital peacebuilding fellows across the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), building on their existing digital practices, civic engagement knowledge, and peacebuilding experience.

This website is itself an output of this partnership and developed to document and share the work of #FYP alongside Sigla's initiatives of deliberative democracy projects.
